Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
Project type
Lighting Design
Role
Lighting Designer
This was the final project for a Lighting Design class. The goal was to design a musical just short of physically making it happen. So, I made an image board, color pencil renderings, and a cue sheet for a few of the songs
Since "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" is a rock musical and portrays Andrew Jackson as a rockstar, I wanted to approach this musical as if it was a rock concert. Having big flashy lighting moments, saturated colors, and plenty of haze was a must for this design. However, script said that this was not supposed to be a perfect performance of vocal talent. With this, I thought that the lighting should not be at today's standard of perfect with all of the LEDs and moving fixtures. So, I challenged myself by not allowing the design to have any LEDs or moving fixtures to make this rock concert look; basically putting myself back into the shoes of lighting designers from the 1970s or so. As you will see in the images below, I loved the look of seeing the clusters of fixtures used during concerts in the 1970s and 1980s, and I think that look really works with this musical.
